Some of the how of good Roleplay

Hmm, roleplay. I could fill books with my rants on that topic. I'll try to keep it brief.

What I consider good roleplay is difficult to define. What works for some doesn't work for others. I appreciate new concepts from one player, while if another player comes up with something similar I disapprove. Some players make roleplay look good regardless of what they play, and other players simply suck at it, no matter how interesting their character concept is.

What I appreciate the most is a player who can balance creativity and originality with realism and fair play. It's easy to be 'creative' - just make a character that is so far out there it's beyond any reasonable standard. It's alot more difficult to remain within the contraints of a given system and still manage to create intruiging characters and intricate storylines. Many players know only two ways of creating characters: flat two-dimensional stereotypes, and outrageous ridiculous parodies of such stereotypes. A good player is capable of balancing his creativity with the rules and limitations of a system.

Description is important too. As said before, you don't have to be elaborate, as long as you put effort into it. Make us 'see' the character. Try to convey to us what your character stands for. Make us curious.

And something I praise above all else is fair play. Too many players see this online roleplay thing as a win-or-lose fight. They don't play WITH people, they play AGAINST people. For them it's about winning, about ending on top, about being the biggest badass. And frankly, that annoys the shit out of me. I'd much rather see a player who is willing and able to take his losses with his victories. Someone who knowingly maneuvers his character into a weaker position. Someone who thinks about what is most fun for others, before he thinks about his own fun. In short, a non-egotistical player. They're very, very rare. The vast majority of roleplayers play for themselves only.

I hope I got across what I wanted to say.
